Jamaika, derived from the Arawak word 'Xaymaca,' means 'land of wood and water.' It was adopted as the official name of the Caribbean island nation in 1655 after the British conquest led by Sir William Penn.
Jamaika saw its highest birth rate with 6 births in 1992. From 1994 onwards, the birth rate stabilized at 5 births per year until 2001, with a total of 26 births recorded over this period.
