Tinna is a female given name of Icelandic origin, derived from the Old Norse word 'tinn' meaning "thin". It is also related to the Old Norse words for tin and thinness. The name Tinna has been used in Iceland since the Middle Ages and is still considered quite traditional there. Internationally, however, it remains less common, adding a unique touch when encountered outside of its native context.
Tinna was quite popular from the mid-50s to late 60s with peaks in 1962 (21 births), 1964 (18 births) and 1966 (22 births). However, its popularity started declining after that period, with no more than 17 births per year between 1967 and 1970. The name then became quite rare, with fewer than 10 births each year until the late 80s and early 90s, except for a brief spike in 1981 (11 births). Overall, Tinna was given to 317 newborn girls over the course of these years.
