Darius is of Persian origin, meaning "holder of power". It was borne by several ancient kings of Persia, notably Darius I (the Great) who ruled from 522 to 486 BCE and initiated the construction of Persepolis. The name was later popularized in the West through the works of Greek historian Herodotus.
