All about the name MARCION

Meaning, origin, history.

Marcion, of Sinope, was an early Christian theologian and apostle who lived around the 2nd century AD. Born into a pagan family, he converted to Christianity following a vision. He later traveled widely, eventually settling in Rome where he established his own church independent from that of the Catholic Church. Marcion is best known for his dualist beliefs, which posited two separate gods: one of the Old Testament, who was jealous and vengeful; and one of the New Testament, who was loving and merciful. He also compiled one of the earliest Christian canons, consisting solely of the Gospel of Luke and ten letters from Paul, excluding all other books that were later included in the Bible. His views were ultimately deemed heretical by the Catholic Church, but his ideas about the two gods had a significant influence on early Gnostic movements. Marcion was eventually excommunicated around 144 AD, but his church persisted for some time and even inspired the formation of other sects with similar beliefs.
