Menelek is an ancient Ethiopian name of regal origin, derived from the Amharic language. It means 'you are wise', signifying profound wisdom and understanding. Historically, it was the name of Emperor Menelek II (1844-1913), who is celebrated for his victories over invading Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
Menelek has consistently been given to six babies each year from 2001 onwards, with no increase or decrease in popularity since then.
