John Kerry, born on December 13, 1943, is an American politician who served as the 68th United States Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017, under President Barack Obama. Prior to this role, he was a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts for nearly three decades, from January 1985 until February 2013. Before his political career, Kerry served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, earning several combat medals including the Silver Star and Bronze Star.
