Pioquinto is of Spanish origin, derived from the Latin 'Petrus' meaning 'rock', and 'Quiñones', a surname of Basque origin. It was popularized during the Counter-Reformation by Saint Peter Claver, who was born with the name Pedro Pío (Peter Pius) and later became known as Padre Pioquinto.
