Aixa, pronounced /ˈaɪkə/, is of Arabic origin and means 'defender' or 'heroine'. It is a unisex name but is more commonly used for females. The name gained prominence during the Moorish period in Spain and was borne by several notable figures, most famously Aixa al-Hatun, wife of the 15th-century Nasrid sultan Muhammad IX of Granada.
The name Aixa experienced a significant surge in popularity from the late 1990s onwards, with a steady increase from around 15 births per year in 1997 to a peak of 65 births in 2007. However, this trend has since declined, with fewer than 30 births recorded each year since 2008. Despite this recent decrease, Aixa remains a popular name overall, with a total of 1098 births recorded between 1958 and 2023.
