Cynthia, derived from the Greek word 'kythara', which means 'wave' or 'wavelike'. It was popularized in Roman times by the poet Propertius who named his beloved Cynthia in his poetry collection, Elegies. Cynthia was also the name of a nymph in Roman mythology who was transformed into a cypress tree by Cybele.
