Finian is an Irish given name of unknown origin, but it's believed to mean "fair" or "white". It's traditionally given to boys and is derived from the Irish word 'Fionn', which can also mean "blond-haired". The name gained popularity through William Butler Yeats' play "The Land of Heart's Desire", where one of the characters shares this name. Finian is also associated with Saint Finian, an Irish monk who founded the monastery at Clonard in County Meath.
Over the course of nearly two decades (1998-2023), a total of 534 children were named Finian. The name's popularity peaked between 2005 and 2008, with around 34 to 41 births per year during this period. Since then, the number of annual Finian births has generally decreased, ranging from 6 to 30 births per year in recent years (2019-2023).
